Dinnerware designed by American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt in Deruta, Italy as part of the Dinner Service collection. In the early 1980s, LeWitt and his family bought a farmhouse in Spoleto, Italy. While looking for new dishes in Rome, LeWitt and his wife Carol discovered the maiolica pottery was made locally, in Deruta, Italy as part of a 600-year-old tradition. Maiolica is a technique of applying a gloss glaze whitened with tin oxide onto fired pottery and finished with vivid, hand-painted colors before firing a second time.
In the fashion of LeWitt's minimalist and conceptual wall drawings and structures, the Dinner Service dishes showcase geometric proportion coupled with the handmade nature of this Italian tradition.
