Benjamin Poulanges was born in Toulouse and lives in Paris. After first painting in the tradition of his father, Poulanges went on to study design and interior decoration. Studying ceramics in Rome brought Poulanges back to the world of fine art, integrating painting and ceramic work into his dynamic oeuvre.
In Orage, his 2020 exhibition at MARCH, Poulanges presented assemblage is influenced by the practices of abstract and primitive pottery and painting and is inspired by the chaos and sudden stillness of thunderstorms. Oversized classical forms of Orage are reworked as oblique forms where chaotic layers of paint in a restrained palette express the instability of natural phenomena. Slanted containers are thrown from the green clay of San Sepolcro, Italy, then coated with slip to create a three-dimensional canvas to which Poulanges paints, with an individual firing for each layer of paint.
