American artist Carrie Mae Smith explores the historic and social implications of utilitarian forms through her painting practice. Her paintings are often depictions of the domestic, of kitchen implements, fine tableware, archival objects, and ingredients or plated dishes she herself has cooked. Reclaiming the objecthood of the domestic and the tradition of still life painting as a woman, Smith’s work holds a subversive quality to a subject matter seen as traditionally beautiful. Influenced by her life in the Northeastern United States and a multidisciplinary background as a former chef and farmer, Smith’s paintings serve as symbols of class, labor, utility, and tradition.
