Based in Los Angeles, California, artist Christopher Norman creates sculptural objects in solid wood. Norman’s form making is strictly subtractive and due to the inherent hidden qualities of the raw material, each piece is the result of an initial idea shifted by the discovery made while sculpting. Norman works with freshly-cut trees over industrially-conditioned material and carves each form using a lathe, a tool that creates axial symmetry. Norman’s work is continually influenced by ancient Egyptian and Greco-Roman forms, monumental Minimalist sculptural, and the super-human scale of the industrial landscape of his native Michigan.
