British studio ceramicist Tanya Gomez draws inspiration from land and sea: from the surrounding terrain of East Sussex where she lives and works, and from years spent working on sailing yachts. Her practice-led process explores dynamic throwing, cutting, and assemblage techniques where forms capture a unique fluidity and movement and evoke a sense of space.
In From Light to Dark, her 2019 exhibition at MARCH, Gomez explores the rougher, earth-hewn nature of porcelain. Working in the heart of the English South Downs where calcified chalkland swells and ruptures under foot, Gomez draws from this landscape of natural phenomena to develop vessels in earthen black clay and white porcelain.
